Like other areas of cultural assimilation, religious minorities are more likely to face discrimination and prejudice based on their religion. In recent years, Muslim and Sikh communities have experienced a large increase in intolerance and aggression—first after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) in the United States and again after the 2016 US presidential election.5 Muslims are people who practice Islam—the second largest religion in the world—while Sikhs practice Sikhism.6 Although they are very different religions, some people who are unfamiliar or unaware of the religions confuse them. Both religions call for their followers to wear specific clothing and accessories as a way of showing their devotion, but they often face discrimination because of hurtful and negative stereotypes associated with what they wear.
